7-Up is a soft drink distributed by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group and ultimately owned by Cadbury Schweppes. It was at one time acquired by Philip Morris.

Product History

  • In October 1929 C. L. Grigg, formerly of the Howdy Corporation in St. Louis, Mo. launched this lemon-flavored soft drink. At this time the beverage was a caramel-colored, lithiated lemon-lime soda and labeled "Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda." It was soon rebranded 7-Up.
  • By the late 1940s, 7-Up had become the third best-selling soft drink in the world.
  • In June 1978, Philip Morris acquired The Seven Up Company.
  • In 1986, Philip Morris sold the domestic operations of The Seven-Up Company to a private investment group for $240 million and the company was merged with Dr Pepper Company. The new management team consolidated administrative functions of The Seven-Up Company at the Dallas headquarters of Dr Pepper Company. Sales and marketing staffs remained separate and, although The Seven-Up Company moved its headquarters to Dallas in 1987, manufacturing of 7-Up products remained at the company's St. Louis facility.
  • In March 1995 Dr Pepper/Seven-Up Companies, Inc. were acquired by Cadbury Schweppes, thus 7-Up became part of Cadbury Beverages North America. [1]

“Natural” Rebranding

Parnership with Telemundo

In summer 2009 7-Up partnered with Telemundo to launch a sweepstakes called 7 Días de Sevenísima, a promotion running from June through August and aimed at Latinos in the U.S. Participants were offered a chance at prizes such as a vacation getaway for four, or amusement park tickets. Thirty-second advertisements were created Telemundo. [2]

The partnership between 7-Up and Telemundo began in 2008, when the two teamed up to launch of 7-Up Receta para tu éxito, a cooking contest that granted an ultimate winner $70,000.[3]
