Billie Jean King (Female tennis pro, member of Philip Morris's Board of Directors): Billie Jean King served on Philip Morris's Board of Directors and as a spokesperson for Philip Morris's interests. King spoke against the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 1996 proposed regulations of tobacco promotion to protect children. Philip Morris in turn supports the Women's Sports Foundation, for which King served as chair of the Board of Trustees in 2000. Philip Morris's relationship with Philip Morris is quite long. In 1989, King served as a consultant to Philip Morris, who paid her $60,000 for "up to six days" of work per year. A work day was considered 4 hours. For any additional days, Philip Morris paid King $10,000 per day.
