Former Republican Congressman Billy Tauzin commenced work as the head of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) in early January 2005. Tauzin is also registered as a lobbyist for PhRMA. [1]

Tauzin was criticised by Democrats early in 2004 when it was rumoured he was negotiating with the drug industry over a possible job. Tauzin had spent almost a full year shepherding the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Bill through Congress. The pharmaceutical industry will reap windfall profits from the Medicare drug bill.

Tauzin resigned as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has oversight of the drug industry, and did not re-contest his seat in the November 2004 eleection. In December 2004 PhRMA confirmed that Tauzin would head the organization. [2]

USA Today reported in January 2005 that Tauzin's pay package is rumoured to be greater than $2 million a year. [3]
