Celgene Corporation is a pharmaceutical company based in Summit, New Jersey, U.S. Its main product is Thalomid, used to treat bone marrow cancer as well as a form of leprosy. (Thalomid is a form of the infamous thalidomide sedative which was used in the 1950s until it was realized that it caused birth defects.) Another of Celgene's drugs is Revlimid which is used to treat the malignant blood disease MDS.
In 2006, sales were nearly US$900 million with profits of US$69 million.
Support for the American Legislative Exchange Council
Celgene was a corporate member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) as of 2011, and was a "Trustee's" level funder of ALEC's 2016 Annual Conference, which in 2010 equated to $5,000. As of 2011 Greg Chesmore, Director of State Government Relations at Celgene, represented Celgene as the ALEC State corporate co-chair of Illinois alongside Sen. Kirk Dillard (R) and Rep. Renée Kosel (R).
ALEC is a corporate bill mill. It is not just a lobby or a front group; it is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators their wishlists to benefit their bottom line. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC's operations. They pay for a seat on ALEC task forces where corporate lobbyists and special interest reps vote with elected officials to approve “model” bills.
