The Centre for Applied Legal Studies "was founded by Professor John Dugard in 1978 as an applied research centre within the Faculty of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand. It started at a time when public interest law groups did not exist in South Africa with three staff members, core funding from the Ford Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation and the Rockefeller Brothers' Fund and the provision of accommodation and financial assistance by the University of the Witwatersrand...
"In 1990, the ANC and other prohibited political organisations were unbanned, starting a period of political negotiations and constitution-making in South Africa. In the same year professor Dugard retired as director and Professor Dennis Davis succeeded him in 1991. Professor Davis steered CALS through a new era in which members of CALS played a central role in the writing of the new constitution. " [1]
