Change to Win coalition, according to its website, was created when "Seven unions and six million workers united in Change to Win in 2005 to build a new movement of working people equipped to meet the challenges of the global economy and restore the American Dream in the 21st century: a paycheck that can support a family, affordable health care, a secure retirement and dignity on the job."[1]

It was formed when the seven member unions split off from the AFL-CIO. The leaders of the breakaway faction said they were leaving because of distress over what they described as the AFL-CIO's ineffectiveness in stopping the long-term decline in union membership.[2]
