George R. Packard

"Dr. Packard is currently Director of the Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC. He is a full professor in The Edwin 0. Reischauer Chair in East Asian Studies, and is concurrently Visiting President, International University of Japan in Niigata.

"Dr. Packard was Dean of SAIS from 1979 to 1993. He founded Johns Hopkins' Foreign Policy Institute, the SAIS Review, the Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies, and the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in China.

"In assuming his new position, Dr. Packard succeeds Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch, who has headed the United States-Japan Foundation since June 1996. The Foundation is a private, American, nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening mutual knowledge and understanding between the US and Japan. It makes grants in the fields of policy, pre-college education, and communications/public opinion. Its Board is made up of both Japanese and American trustees, and its goals and constituencies are binational.

"Dr. Packard first went to Japan in 1956. After a stint in intelligence and then as a research scholar at Tokyo University, he became special assistant to the US Ambassador to Japan, Edwin 0. Reischauer. Upon returning to the States, he entered a journalistic career, first with Newsweek, and then with the Philadelphia Bulletin, for which he was White House Correspondent. He later became editor of the Philadelphia Evening and Sunday Bulletin." 1998
