Geosequestration

Geosequestration is the term used to describe the technology of capturing greenhouse gas emissions from power stations and pumping them into underground reservoirs. It is also referred to in some circles as carbon capture and storage (CCS).

While the technology is largely untested and, by most estimates, more expensive than renewables and energy efficiency, it is being promoted by the fossil fuels and energy industries as an alternative to reducing reliance on fossil fuel energy sources.

Major fossil fuel companies such as Rio Tinto - and some governments - are promoting geosequestration as the main 'solution' to climate change caused by rising greenhouse gas emissions.
