Greece is a southeastern European country on the Balkan Peninsula that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea with Italy to the west (across the Ionian Sea) and Turkey to the east (across the Aegean Sea). Greece has been in conflict with Turkey over the divided island of Cyprus. Still Greece is giving strong backing for the admission of Turkey into the European Union. Both countries are members of NATO. [1] [2]
