"he Alliance was founded in 1993 by the governments of France, Sweden, the United States and the United Kingdom, and the European Union and Rockefeller Foundation. Since then, its donor support base has been broadened to include 17 major trusts, foundations and corporate partners, as well as 13 governments. Many of the Alliance’s local partners also receive funding directly from their governments, the private sector, the European Commission, the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria, and the World Bank.
"The Alliance’s income has risen significantly in the last four years: from $20.6 million in 2003, $35.7 in 2004, to $45.1 million in 2005. In 2006, Alliance income continued to grow rapidly, reaching $60.9 million – an increase of 33% on 2005. All sources of funding increased, with the largest increase coming from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Alliance’s largest source of funding continues to be from governments. This sector represented 45% of total income.
