Jere R. Behrman (PhD, M.I.T, 1966) is the W. R. Kenan Professor of Economics and Director of the Population Studies Center at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has been on the faculty since 1965.

He has worked as a research consultant with numerous national and international organizations, including the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

His research interests include population, poverty and the environment in rural India, and the impact of parental education on children (and the economy as a whole).

In general, he is cautiously in favour of trade liberalisation in developing countries, with the caveat that it may lead to greater inequalities in the short term. Amongst other things, he advocates parental education, flexible credit arrangements for rural populations in Inda, and access by private markets to common environmental resources.
