June Mercer is a retired employee of the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles who worked in Golden, Colorado.
In 1980, Mercer filed a lawsuit against the Jefferson County Commissioners and other officials alleging that she was forced to quit her job because secondhand tobacco smoke aggravated her asthma and bronchitis. She was fired for excessive illness. Eventually, her case went before the Colorado Supreme Court where she won a judgement and was awarded two years of back pay and reinstatement of her retirement benefits. The Court also ordered the County to give Mercer her job back and required the County to provide her with a smoke-free environment. The case took three years to resolve. [1][2]
Mercer was secretary of GASP of Colorado in 1996.[3]
