The nuclear power industry and government regulatory agencies traditionally used PR campaigns to overcome public opposition to the licensing and expansion of nuclear power plants and the disposal of nuclear waste.

More recently the nuclear industry and governments have sought to position the construction of new nuclear power stations as an important part in the global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
