The Office of the Secretary of Defense is headed by Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld.

During the tenure of Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird (1969-72), the Defense Investigative Service, the Defense Mapping Agency, the Office of Net Assessment, and the Defense Security Assistance Agency (to administer all DoD military assistance programs) were established.
