PT Bayan Resources Tbk is an Indonesian coal company founded by Dato' Low Tuck Kwong in 1973, which first began as a construction company specializing in general civil works, earth works and marine construction. The company's first coal mining contract was awarded in 1988. In November 1997, Dato' Low acquired his first mining concession through PT. Gunungbayan Pratamacoal, and PT Dermaga Perkasapratama that owns and operates Balikpapan Coal Terminal in 1998.

The Bayan Group, through various companies, notes on their website that they have "exclusive rights to mine under five Coal Contracts of Works (CCOWs) and three Kuasa Pertambangan's (KPs) awarded by the Government of Indonesia over a total concession area of 81,265 Ha."[1]

Coal exports

PT Bayan Resources Tbk owns the Balikpapan Coal Terminal (BCT) is one of the largest coal terminals in Indonesia located in East Kalimantan province. BCT has a handling throughput capacity of 15.0 million tonnes and a stockpiling capacity of approximately one million tonnes across 16 stockpiles. Since commencing operations in 1995, BCT has handled more than 55.0 million tonnes of coal and loaded more than 1,000 vessels. In 2007, PT Bayan Resources completed the expansion of BCT, increasing annual throughput capacity by an additional six million tonnes to 15 MTDA.[2]

PT Bayan Resources also operates the Kalimantan Floating Transfer Station which loads coal onto Cape-size vessels. It has the capacity to load coal to such vessels at a rate of 4,000 tonnes per hour.[3]

Partnerships

In October 2011, PT Bayan said it had extended and expanded mining contract services with PT Thiess Contractors Indonesia for Thiess to mine Bayan properties through 2016.[4]
