"Responsible Living" was one of the early Tobacco Industry Youth Smoking Prevention Programs created and promoted widely by the Tobacco Institute in the early 1990s as the industry's response to growing public concerns about the industry targeting youth in its advertising and promotions. "Responsible Living" was an umbrella program to other such offerings from the Institute , namely programs like "Helping Youth Decide, and "Helping Youth Say No."

According to the Institute, the Responsible Living Program was created to "aid the nation's young people in decision-making concerning important questions of choice posed by a range of adult activities and customs." The communications strategy for the program was to "Position cigarette smoking as one decision among many that should be based on mature and informed judgement."[1]
