ROOT Technology (RT) is British American Tobacco's term for the addition and manipulation of ammonia in cigarettes to reduce harshness of smoke, and to help remove irritants in smoke like acrolein and formaldehyde "which produce an irritating effect even at low concentration." Ammonia is also noted to boost flavor of cigarettes. [1]
