Samuel W. Bodman

Samuel Wright Bodman (Sam Bodman), of Massachusetts, was appointed December 10, 2004, by President George W. Bush to be Secretary of Energy in the Department of Energy. His nomination was sent to the Senate January 4, 2005, and he was confirmed February 1, 2005.

At the time of his appointment, Dr. Bodman was serving as Deputy Secretary of Treasury. Prior to that, he served as Deputy Secretary of Commerce. Before joining the Bush Administration, "Dr. Bodman was Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Cabot Corporation, a global specialty chemicals and materials company.

"Earlier in his career, Dr. Bodman served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Fidelity Investments and Director of Fidelity Group Mutual Funds. Before that, he was President and Director of Fidelity Management and Research and Vice President of Corporate Development for Fidelity Venture Associates. Dr. Bodman previously served as Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Engineering Practice and was an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering.

"Dr. Bodman received a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a Doctorate of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology." [1]

"Born in 1938 in Chicago, he graduated in 1961 with a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University. In 1965, he completed his ScD at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For the next six years he served as an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at MIT and began his work in the financial sector as Technical Director of the American Research and Development Corporation, a pioneer venture capital firm. He and his colleagues provided financial and managerial support to scores of new business enterprises located throughout the United States...

Mr. Bodman served as Chairman since 1988, and Chief Executive Officer from 1988 until March 2001, of Cabot Corporation, a company with business in energy and special chemicals and materials. his other Directorships are: Cabot Corporation, John Hancock Financial Services, Inc., Thermo Electron Corp. and Westvaco Corp."
