Biographical Information

Simon Thompson is Chairman of Rio Tinto.

Simon Thompson was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of Tullow Oil "in May 2011 and was appointed non-executive Chairman from 1 January 2012. He holds a degree in geology and brings a wealth of international investment banking and natural resources knowledge and experience, especially in Africa. From 1985, he held investment banking roles at N M Rothschild and S G Warburg. In 1995, he joined the Anglo American group where he held a number of senior positions including Chief Executive of the Base Metals Division, Chairman of the Exploration Division and Chairman of the Tarmac Group. He was appointed an Executive Director of Anglo American plc in 2005. Since leaving Anglo American in 2007, he has held a number of Non-Executive Director positions. These currently include Newmont MiningCorporation (USA), Sandvik AB (Sweden) and AMEC plc (UK)." [1]
