Susana Arce was the Dean of Students - Girls at Nordhoff High School, in the Ojai Unified school district in California. She was the dean who suspended Leslie Whiteley for smoking. Leslie Whiteley sued Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer caused by smoking. Whitely began smoking in 1972, seven years after cigarette warning labels first appeared. The jury awarded Whitely $1.7 million in compensatory damages and $20 million in punitive damages.
