In connection with commenting on the effective of the office of the Attorney General of Illinois in protecting the public from unsafe consumer products, Ms. Martin was quoted in the December 16, 2007 edition of the Chicago Tribune as saying, "Nobody wants kids to get poisoned, but is what she's doing really going to stop it, or is it an effort to capitalize on a nanny-state, feel-good gesture?" This is the kind of mindset that pervades the ineptly named "Heartland" Institute. To suggest that Attoney General Madigan may have ulterior political motives is a political opinion. To suggest that the public has no over-arching need to be protected from unscrupulous business interests by state and federal government is disengenuous.
