Bio
Everett was born February 15, 1937 in Dothan as the oldest son of a sharecropper and railroad worker. Both died at an early age, and Everett had to work two jobs to help his two brothers and sister. After graduating high school, he served four years in the Air Force as an intelligence specialist in Europe. Shortly after returning to the States, he became a reporter at the Dothan Eagle and eventually became owner of a chain of newspapers in the Southeast. He sold all but one of his holdings in 1988. Everett was elected to the U.S. House in 1992.[1]
2006 elections
In 2006, the Democrats nominated Charles D. James to face Everett in his November 2006 bid for reelection. (See U.S. congressional elections in 2006) [2] Everett retained his seat.
Retirement
On September 26, 2007, Everett announced that he would retire at the end of the term. Everett was first elected in 1994, and served eight terms in Congress. He attributed his retirement to his advancing age, as he was turning 71. “While there remains much work to be accomplished by Congress, I made a difficult decision over the weekend not to seek election for a ninth term,” Everett said. “The decision was difficult because of my love for the people of my district, and my love for the work I do on my three committees."[2]
Everett's district was considered heavily Republican. He won 68.1% of the vote in the 2006 election.[3]
