UnoAmérica is a Latin American NGO founded in December 2008.[1] Its President is the Venezuelan Alejandro Peña Esclusa,[2] a presidential candidate in 1998 for the Partido Laboral Venezolano.[3] UnoAmérica declares itself in opposition to the Sao Paulo Forum;[4] one sympathetic source describes it as "an anti-communist alliance".[5] Its website does not declare any source of funding.

In March 2009 Peña Esclusa said that "...before recovering permanently freedom and democracy in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua, there will be a traumatic process. Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales, Rafael Correa and Daniel Ortega are dictators, and -as such - they will not hand over power peacefully and democratically. However, I feel very confident that afterwards freedom and democracy will prevail for a long time."[6] He had been investigated in 2007 for attempting to destabilise Venezuela in the run up to the 2007 constitutional vote.[7]

UnoAmérica was one of the few Latin American organizations to endorse the June 2009 Honduras coup d'etat.[8] Subsequently, Peña Esclusa endorsed as constitutional the deposing of Zelaya, and said that "Only a process similar to that of Honduras can rescue democracy and freedom in Venezuela".[9][10] He also said that “Venezuelans ought to be inspired by the Honduran model, and strive for a change of government as soon as possible, through pacific, democratic, and constitutional means--and not just electoral--to avoid a national tragedy".[11]

In June 2010, the Chávez-appointed Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Relations, Nicolás Maduro, described Peña Esclusa as a man that "has spent his life tied to the CIA and numerous violent movements including the 2002 military coup [against president Hugo Chávez] and a member of violent right-wing groups that moved about Central America for long periods alongside Luis Posada Carriles, a terrorist protected by the North American justice system and wanted in Venezuela."[9] On July 13, 2010 the website of the Venezuelan Minstry of Information and Communication published a list of accusations, such as his being involved in a murder plot against Pope John Paul II, the murder attempt of President Ronald Reagan, etc.; they also presented a list of democratic activities he has been involved in aiming at peacefully and legally accomplishing regime change in Venezuela.[12]

One of the leading members of UnoAmerica in Bolivia is Jorge Mones Ruiz a leader of the Carapintadas.[13] UnoAmerica may be linked with Roger Noriega and the National Endowment for Democracy.[14][15] Its president Esclusa may be linked with the Schiller Institute, which had links with Otto Reich, Donald Rumsfeld and others.[16]
