The Weather Modification Association (WMA) was organized in 1950/51 as the Weather Control Research Association and changed its name in 1967 to the Weather Modification Association. [1]

The stated purpose of the WMA is "to cultivate a better understanding of weather modification techniques, impacts, and expectations among program sponsors, program operators, and the scientific community, and to promote ethical professional conduct and a free exchange of information," its website states. "Weather modification can be both planned, as is the case in cloud seeding (cloud modification), or inadvertent, for example, when pollution affects visibility." [2]

As set forth in the organization's by-laws, the WMA: [3]

  1. Promotes "research, development and understanding of weather modification (technology) for beneficial uses."
  2. Encourages and promotes "the highest standards of conduct including certification of individual members qualified to execute field experiments of operations in weather modification."
  3. Serves as a "clearing house and dissemination agent for weather modification oriented literature and information."
  4. Assumes "an active role and maintaining a strong voice in the production and dissemination of policy statements concerning all aspects of weather modification."
  5. Publishes, "annually or more frequently, as the official organ of the Association, the Journal of Weather Modification containing scientific articles and reports about weather modification problems and activities, and accounts of Association business."

Additionally, WMA "also has established a certification program for weather modification operators and managers." [4]
