Voting against the McCain Amendment
On October 5, 2005, Kit Bond was one of only 9 Senators to vote against the McCain Amendment No. 1977 to the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2006, which bans the use of torture by US forces.
Bond told the Washington Post, "The last thing we want to do is put undue burdens on military and intelligence officials who are on the ground trying to obtain critical information on the war on terror. There are already guidelines in place, including administrative processes, to investigate misconduct and take corrective and punitive action." "[1]
Bio
Born March 6, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri, Bond graduated from Princeton University in 1960 and received his law degree from the University of Virginia, where he graduated first in his class. He served as a clerk in the Fifth Circuit Court in Atlanta, Georgia. Bond then practiced law in Washington, DC before returning to Mexico, Missouri.
In 1969, Bond became an Assistant Attorney General under John Danforth. Before being elected State Auditor in 1970, Bond was chief counsel of Missouri's Consumer Protection Division.
He was elected governor in 1972 and 1980, serving from 1973 to 1977 and from 1981 to 1985. Bond was succeeded in 1985 by John Ashcroft, a fellow Republican. After Sen. Thomas Eagleton decided not to run for re-election, Bond was elected senator in 1986 and re-elected in 1992, 1998, and 2004.
