Dr. Eugene P. Trani was appointed the fourth president and Chair of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) on July 1, 1990, and serves as President and Chair of the Board of Directors of the VCU Health System. VCU operates a major Medical Center and a School of Public Health.

In 1991, Dr. Trani negotiated an agreement with Philip Morris to continue to allow smoking in 41 out of 42 facilities belonging to VCU. The one exception was the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. PM was unable to talk Trani into allowing smoking at the Hospital because the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), effective January 1, 1992, instituted a policy which required accredited hospitals to establish a hospitalwide no-smoking policy throughout all their buildings.[1]

In February 2000, Dr. Trani was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Universal Corporation, a major American tobacco leaf dealer.[2] According United States Securities and Exchange Commission filing, as of August 9, 2007, Dr. Trani owned 6,250 shares of Universal Corp. common stock.

As of May, 2008 Dr. Trani was still serving on Universal Corporation's Board of Directors, according to Universal's Web site.
