Positions, record and controversies
Economy
Peters says on his campaign website that he supports tax cuts for the middle class, ending subsidies for oil companies, and tax cuts and incentives for small businesses to get new equipment and hire more employees. [1]
Environment
Peters supports policies that increase cleaner air and water, and preserve our natural resources, while allowing for sustainable economic growth. [1]
National Security
Peters' plan to enhance national security includes responsibly ending the war in Iraq, ensuring the strength of the U.S. - Israeli relationship, and knowing and controlling who is entering the country. [1]
Spending
Peters supports policies that balance the budget, cut wasteful spending, and encourage fiscal responsibility. [1]
Healthcare
Peters says on his campaign website, that getting quality, affordable healthcare for all Americans is one of his top priorities. He also says that he supports plans that are portable. He does not support universal healthcare for illegal immigrants. [1]
Veterans
Peters says he supports fully-funding veterans health care, making it a top priority to end the backlog of VA claims, ending the 'widow's tax' (a tax on spouses receiving survivor benefits and social security simultaneously), expanding VA healthcare and benefits to the National Guard and Reserve, encouraging more focus on PTSD and TBI in the VA healthcare system.[1]
Bio
Peters is a former Lieutenant Commander in the Navy Reserve, and an accomplished businessman who served as Vice President for two major investment firms. He was twice elected from Oakland County to serve in the Michigan Senate. He is currently the Griffin Chair of American Government at Central Michigan University.[2]
2008 elections
Peters won the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent Rep. Joseph Knollenberg (R-Mich.) in the 2008 congressional elections, and went on to defeat Knollenberg in the November 2008 general election.[3]
