Lufthansa Airlines, the flagship airline of Germany, was the target of a "vicious" organized lobbying campaign by the German tobacco industry to scuttle a smoking ban on German domestic flights in the 1990s. The tobacco industry in Germany, working with the popular German daily newspaper, Bild, stopped the airline Lufthansa from banning smoking on its domestic flights. The company started efforts to ban smoking in 1989, but did not finally enact a smoking restriction on flights until 1996.^[1]
