Ambassador Marilyn McAfee "was a career foreign service officer from 1968 to 1998 primarily in Latin America. She began her overseas assignments in Guatemala and returned to serve as U.S. Ambassador from 1993-1996. As a member of the UNF Foundation (University of North Florida Foundation) Board of Directors, she works tirelessly to develop resources and attract the talent that will sustain and strengthen the University of North Florida.

"Ambassador McAfee was instrumental in forming a strategic partnership between UNF and the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, thereby enhancing the cultural and intellectual life of the campus and community through programs such as the Distinguished Voices Lecture Series. It has become one of the University’s premier programs attracting large audiences of students, faculty, and members of the community. Ambassador McAfee also initiated Student Worldquest and Great Decisions. These annual exercises offer exceptional learning experiences for students from UNF and local area high schools.

"Appointed by Governor Jeb Bush, Ambassador McAfee serves as the Secretary of the Board of Directors, Jacksonville Seaport Authority. In addition to the Presidential Meritorious Service Award, Ambassador McAfee received of the Department of State’s Distinguished Honor Award for her work towards advancing the peace process and human rights in Guatemala. She is the recipient of four Meritorious Honor Awards and the Superior Honor Award." [1]
