Puerto Rico (U.S. territory)
Puerto Rico is a self-governing Commonwealth of the U.S., located southeast of the U.S. in the Caribbean Sea/Atlantic Ocean, with a population of 3.9 million and capital city of San Juan. The U.S. invaded the island in 1898, taking control from Spain. Some Puerto Ricans want the territory to become the 51st state of the U.S., others are happy with the current political situation, and still others want Puerto Rico to be an independent country.
The U.S. once had a large military presence on the island which has since been scaled down with the shutting down of a major naval base and bombing range. [1] [2]
