The Samuel Griffith Society is a group that has the objective "To defend the Australian Constitution against all who would attempt to undermine it." [1]

Annual Conference

The Society holds an annual conference, the latest one being held in May 2006, in Canberra. Speaker at that conference included:

  • Dr Janet Albrechtsen
  • Professor James Allan
  • Ben Davies: With degrees in political science and law, Ben Davies has been a Board member of the Society since 2003. After periods as an adviser to federal Ministers Tony Abbott and Kevin Andrews (2000-2006), he now works in a Melbourne law firm. In 2005 he won the Governor-General's prize for essays on the Australian Constitution.
  • Professor David Flint, AM: In the course of a distinguished academic career Professor Flint served as Chairman of the Australian Press Council and, subsequently, Chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Authority. A member of the Board of the Society, he is best known today as National Convenor of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy.
  • Hon Justice Dyson Heydon, AC: After a distinguished career both academically (Professor of Law, Sydney University 1973-81) and at the NSW Bar (QC, 1987), Mr Heydon became a Judge of the NSW Court of Appeal (2000-03) before being appointed, in 2003, a Justice of the High Court of Australia.
  • Hon Tom Hughes, AO, QC: After service in the RAAF Mr Hughes was called to the NSW Bar in 1949 (QC, 1962). A Liberal Party member in the House of Representatives (1963-72) and Attorney-General (1969-71) in the Gorton Government, it was he who recommended Sir Harry Gibbs's original appointment to the High Court.
  • David Jackson, QC: A Queenslander by origin, Mr Jackson was called to the Bar there in 1964 after having served (1963-64) as Associate to Mr Justice Gibbs, then of the Queensland Supreme Court. Having become QC in 1976, since 1987 he has been one of Sydney's leading barristers, notably in the area of constitutional law.
  • Hon Dr Gary Johns
  • Hon Justice Michael Kirby, AC, CMG: His Honour's distinguished career in the law began with admission to the NSW Bar in 1967. After numerous legal and judicial appointments he became President of the NSW Court of Appeal (1984-96), before being appointed (1996) as a Justice of the High Court of Australia.
