Bio
Levin was born September 6, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Central High School in Detroit, received a B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1952, an M.A. in international relations from Columbia University in 1954, and an LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1957. After developing a private law practice, he served in the Michigan State Senate from 1965 - 1970, and was Senate Minority Leader from 1969-1970. He made unsuccessful campaigns for Governor of Michigan in 1970 and 1974. He was assistant administrator of the Agency for International Development from 1977 - 1981. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1982 and was reelected for the eleventh time in 2004.
Levin's brother, Carl Levin, is a U.S. senator from Michigan. His uncle Theodore Levin was a federal judge. His first cousin Charles Levin was a Michigan Supreme Court judge. His first cousin Joseph Levin was a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives.

In 2006, the Republicans nominated Randell J. Shafer to face Lender in his November 2006 bid for reelection. (See U.S. congressional elections in 2006) [1] Levin retained his seat.
