Bio
Background
Poe was born September 10, 1948 in Temple, Texas. He graduated from Abilene Christian University with a degree in Political science and earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Houston Law Center. After serving as a chief felony prosecutor in Harris County (Houston) for eight years, Poe was appointed as a felony court judge in Harris County in 1981. As a judge, he gained national prominence for his unusual criminal sentences that included ordering thieves to carry signs in front of stores they stole from and requiring murderers to place a photo of their victim on the wall of their prison cell.
Congressional Career
In 2004, Poe ran for the U.S. House in the 2nd District of Texas against Nick Lampson, who was an incumbent redistricted into District 2. Poe won 55% of the vote to Lampson's 43%.
2006 elections
In 2006, the Democrats nominated Gary E. Binderim to face Poe in his November 2006 bid for reelection. (See U.S. congressional elections in 2006) [1] Poe retained his seat.
