Tibet Fund
The Tibet Fund was founded in 1981, and describes itself as the "primary non-profit organization dedicated to helping Tibetans improve their lives and preserve their distinct cultural, religious and national identity." Their website goes on to note that:
- "The Tibet Fund also actively supports the Central Tibetan Administration by administering the Tibetan Solidarity or Blue Book Project, which was started in 1987. Through the Khawachen Assistance Program (KAP), the Tibet Fund also helps Tibetans in Tibet by providing funds to local NGOs for projects that treat and prevent blindness, house and care for orphans, and provide educational opportunities and emergency relief." History
"The situation of Tibet and Tibetans received heightened visibility when His Holiness the Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. This was followed by an increase in support for the Tibet Fund, most significantly from the congressionally mandated US State Department's Humanitarian Assistance Grant for Tibetans that started in 1991.
"This grant focuses on health care and education programs and the support of three reception centers for new refugees from Tibet. In addition, the US State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, formerly the US Information Agency, funds the Tibetan Scholarship Program which started in 1988, provides scholarships to bring Tibetan students to study in the United States." Funding
"The Tibet Fund receives funding from foundations, corporations and numerous individuals. The congressionally mandated Humanitarian Assistance Grant from the US State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration and the Tibetan Scholarship Program from the Fulbright Program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs are important sources of funding for The Tibet Fund."
