Alex Azar

Alex M. Azar II was appointed by George W. Bush as the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2005. Before this appointment, Mr. Azar served as General Counsel at HHS for four years between August 2001 and May 2005. [1]

Azar was first an Associate and then a partner with the law firm of Wiley Rein & Fielding in Washington, D.C. between October 1996 and June 2001. He was previously an Associate Independent Counsel with the Office of Independent Counsel between October 1994 and September 1996. He was an Associate with Kirkland & Ellis between October 1993 and October 1994. Azar is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Yale Law School. [2]

In a statement filed with the Senate Committee on Finance for his confirmation hearing, Azar disclosed that has has been a mamber of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies, a member of Lawyers for Bush-Cheney 2004, a member of the Republican National Lawyers Association and a donor to various political campaigns including $2,000 to Bush-Cheney '04 Inc..
