Background on Mine

The 7 million ton-per-annum Basundhara coal mines were first opened in 1998. The mines are owned by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of state-owned Coal India).[1][2]

Expansion

MCL is currently building the Kulda 10 MTPA mine expansion at Basundhara.[1]

2013 Accident

In August 2013, 14 local villagers were killed when a portion of an underground mine collapsed at the Kulda site. Villagers were apparently gathering coal from an overloaded dump yard when the mine collapsed underneath them. At a meeting prior to the reopening of the mine, villagers complained that they had still not been compensated adequately for their relocation prior to the mine's construction.[3][4]
