CARE Australia was formed in 1987 by former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser and is "the largest non-political non-religious overseas aid organisation in the country, providing humanitarian assistance across the globe." [1]

Funding

According to their Annual Report 2004-05 in 2004 CARE Australia had total assets worth $15.5 million, which increased to $50 million in 2005. Their total revenue in 2005 was $63 million. This can be broken down as follows:

  • $22 million - Donations and gifts from the Australian public (plus legacies)
  • $13 million - AusAid
  • $20 million - Project grants from CARE International members
  • $3 million - Project grants from multilateral agencies
  • $3.5 million - Project grants from foreign governments and overseas-based organisations

What is noticable is that they have massively increased the proportion of their funding derived directly from the public in recent years as their 2002 Annual Report shows that of their $55 million income:

  • Donations, legacies and bequests from the Australian public made up only 10%
  • AusAID 12%
  • CARE International members 57%
  • Multilaterals 12%
  • Foreign Governments and Agencies 8%
  • Other 1%

For details of all funding partners including governments and international development banks see.

According to their website:

"We are primarily dependant on support from the Australian public to carry out our work. Over the last eight years around 90 per cent of our total income from the Australian public and all other sources has been spent on work in the field, rather than on administration overheads." [2]
