The Center for Social Media "showcases and analyzes strategies to use media as creative tools for public knowledge and action. It focuses on social documentaries for civil society and democracy, and on the public media environment that supports them. The Center is part of the School of Communication at American University." [1]

In May 2005 the Center "received a $1 million dollar, two-year grant from the Ford Foundation, to launch the Public Media ThinkTank. The ThinkTank will conduct and publish research on new directions in public media, convene meetings of leaders throughout the field to think through these directions, host public events and screenings to showcase the best in public media, and encourage and create demonstration experiments in new public media expression. The ThinkTank’s activities will begin in September." pdf
