DocumentCloud was conceived and proposed by journalists working at ProPublica and the New York Times and funded through a Knight News Challenge grant in June 2009. DocumentCloud is a 501c3 organization, building a catalog of primary source documents and a tool for annotating, organizing and publishing them on the web. Documents are contributed by journalists, researchers and archivists who are then able to embed a lightweight viewer to the document on their own sites.
