"GAIA has had its home at Coombe Mill in West Devon since 1988. The site was chosen by Dr Lovelock as ideal for his private scientific research work at the time. All of the land and buildings were donated by the founders to GAIA in 1998 to continue its work.

"The house is set within thirty-five acres of natural habitat in West Devon. The land, which includes a river frontage of about one mile, provides a variety of habitats for a diversity of birds, animals, plants and invertebrates. The land has been used as a ‘field study’ centre, the laboratory for research, and the offices as a meeting place for the charity trustees and visitors.

"Coombe Mill has provided an inspirational home for Jim Lovelock during a very productive phase of his work. It has been the site of scientific discoveries and inventions, including the computer model, "Daisyworld; which pioneered the mathematical basis for Gaia theory. The Coombe Mill laboratory also played a key role in the Montreal Protocol, which banned the emission of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's)." [1]
