John Heyl "is senior vice president for development at CSIS, where he oversees strategic planning, membership groups, and leadership outreach, in addition to planning the Center’s first capital campaign. Heyl has spent most of his career in development work, beginning in 1970 at his alma mater, Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, as alumni secretary and then director of annual giving. From there, he went to the Harvard Business School in Boston, where he ran the HBS Fund. Following that, he managed the development program at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, before serving as vice president at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

"He first came to Washington, D.C., in 1987, where he served as vice president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and then vice president of Conservation International before returning to New England in 1996. While at the National Trust, he also served as the first president of the Foundation for James Madison's Montpelier. For the nine years prior to joining CSIS, Heyl was vice president for development and university relations at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he oversaw a major capital campaign and developed a comprehensive marketing program for the university."
