Lee A. Smithey

Lee A. Smithey "serves as Coordinator of the Peace and Conflict Studies program at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. He is an Assistant Professor in the college’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology, where he studies social movements, ethno-political conflict, and nonviolent conflict methods. He has focused much of his work on conflict transformation in Northern Ireland.

"Some of his publications have addressed the strategic choreography of parading disputes in Northern Ireland, third-party nonviolent intervention, and the role of nonviolent social movements in the fall of the Soviet Bloc. In separate projects, he is currently studying repression management in civil resistance and the changing symbolic landscape on the streets of West Belfast. He holds a BA from Emory University and an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Smithey is a former Chair of the Peace, War, and Social Conflict section of the American Sociological Association."
