New Hope Corporation (or New Hope Coal Australia) has interests in coal mining, port operations and resource based activities in Queensland.

They own the New Acland Coal mine in Queensland. [1]

On its website the company states that it "holds various exploration tenements in central Queensland and on the Darling Downs in southern Queensland. New Hope’s investments include a 100 per cent shareholding in Queensland Bulk Handling, a common user coal export terminal at the Port of Brisbane, and significant land holdings around Ipswich and near its mining operations at Acland.[1]

Affiliations

New Hope Coal Australia is a member of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC), a peak body for the mining industry in Queensland.[2] The company is not a member of the Minerals Council of Australia, QRC's national counterpart.[3]

Political donations

The disclosed donations by Washington H Soul Pattinson and Company -- including donations return on behalf of New Hope Corporation -- to the Liberal Party of Australia were:

  • $50,000 on August 6, 2004;[5]
  • $20,000 on May 22, 2009;[6]
  • $25,000 on July 1, 2009;[7]
  • $250,000 in three separate donations: $100,000 on July 26, 2010, a further $100,000 on August 2, 2010 and $50,000 on May 12, 2011.[8]
  • $200,000 on June 26 2012;[9] and
  • $250,000 on May 22, 2013 and a further $1,900 on March 1 2013 to the Liberal Party of Queensland.[10]

In the 2004-2005 financial year Soul Pattinson donated $6,400 to Labor Holdings.[11]

  • March 28, 2012: A spokeswoman for Queensland Premier Campbell Newman states that "the LNP will not support the proposal for Acland stage three (because) it covers some areas of strategic cropping land, and would come too close to local communities."[14]
  • June 26 2012: Washington H Soul Pattinson and Company donated a further $200,000 to the Liberal Party of Australia; [9]
  • September 5, 2012: New Hope Corporation gave Queensland Premier Campbell Newman an "Authentic Miners Lamp and Shirt" which was valued at $214.00. The gift was kept by Newman.[12]
  • October 20, 2012: Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane and Toowoomba North state MP Trevor Watts were guests of New Hope at the Bledisloe Cup match between the Wallabies and the All Blacks at Suncorp Stadium.[15]

  • June 22, 2013: New Hope hosts Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane, state Energy and Electricity Minister Mark McArdle and Environment Minister Andrew Powell as guests to watch the Australian rugby team, the Wallabies, play the British and Irish Lions at Suncorp Stadium. Toowoomba North state MP Trevor Watts, who is a member of the Darling Downs Regional Planning committee, was also a guest. Other guests were Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale and federal LNP backbencher Scott Bucholz.[15]
