Non-membership based

Non-membership based is a term used to refer to groups that do not have formal membership rolls or initiations, but rather are a broad umbrella term for direct actions that share similar tactical or idelogical persuasions. For example, to "join" the Animal Liberation Front, one need only commit an action that follows a prescribed set of outlines, followed by a claiming of responsibility in the "name" of ALF.

While many non-membership based organizations are organized into autonomous cells, not all cell organizations are non-membership based. Al Qaeda, for instance, while organized into functionally autonomous cells, still requires initiation and orders from a command structure up above.

Non-membership Based Groups
