Peter Gastrow (Institute for Security Studies, Cape Town Director)

"Mr. Gastrow studied Economics and Law at Natal University in Durban before establishing his own legal practice as an advocate of the Supreme Court of South Africa. He served as a member of parliament and in 1991 participated in the creation of the National Peace Accord. He was a member of the National Peace Committee and the National Peace Secretariat, the bodies charged with implementing the National Peace Accord in South Africa. Prior to the first democratic election in 1994, he chaired one of the Councils of the transitional government. After the elections he was appointed the special adviser of the new Minister for Safety and Security to assist with the transformation of South Africa’s Police Service.In 1998 Mr. Gastrow joined the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), an independent non-governmental applied policy research institute, as the Director of its Cape Town office. He has researched and published on issues relating to governance, conflict, and organized crime and policing." [1]
