Richard Carver

Richard Carver "is a freelance writer and researcher based in Cape Town, South Africa. He has worked for the last 17 years in and with human rights organizations. He was a researcher at Amnesty International, research director of Human Rights Watch/Africa and head of the Africa Programme at ARTICLE 19, the Global Campaign for Free Expression. He currently works mainly in the field of media monitoring and freedom of expression issues in Southern Africa. He edited ARTICLE 19's manuals on media monitoring and on human rights investigations. As a researcher at Amnesty International in the 1980s he was a pioneer in the use of forensic medicine in investigating torture. He has recently conducted a detailed evaluation of the effectiveness of national human rights institutions. He is the author of the following Learning for change courses: Introduction to human rights (with Colleen Richardson); Investigating, monitoring and reporting on human rights violations; Freedom of information."
