Pre-George W. Bush administration "-gates"

After Watergate it became commonplace to affix "-gate" to a word to create a name for a scandal, especially a political scandal in Washington, D.C. Examples include:

  • Koreagate [1]
  • Billygate is associated with when the government of Libya was trying to influence U.S. policy through President Jimmy Carter's brother Billy Carter. [2]
  • Irangate was the Reagan administration's Iran-Contra scandal. [3]
  • Travelgate involved the White House travel office during the first Clinton administration. [4]
  • Whitewatergate was the Republican "fact-finding" adventure regarding the alleged Clinton-related White Water investment scandal.
