The Texas Cancer Council is located at 211 East 7th, Suite 710, Austin, Texas 78701, (512)463-3190. The Texas Cancer Council is an agency which strengthens cancer prevention and control efforts in the State of Texas. This agency funds cancer prevention programs through grant and contract programs for private and state entities. The Cancer Council was created to implement the Texas Cancer Plan, which was initially developed by the Legislative Task Force on Cancer and adopted by the 69th Legislature in 1985. The Council became independent from the Department of Health on September 1, 1991. The mission of the Council is to reduce the human and economic impact of cancer on Texans through the promotion and support of collaborative innovative and effective programs and policies for cancer prevention and control. The Texas Cancer Plan aims to reduce cancer in Texas by accomplishing four goals: (1) implementing cancer prevention and education programs and policies; (2) promoting early cancer screening, detection and diagnosis; (3) improving accessibility, availability and quality of cancer treatment; and (4) expanding cancer control research.
