The Tobacco Alliance in the United Kingdom was the equivalent of Philip Morris' Tobacco Action Network in the U.S. It was created in 1982, and Daniel J. Edelman Public Relations handled the Tobacco Alliance's day-to- day management. The Alliance was created to serve as a communications network for people who work in the industry, or whose livelihoods depended upon tobacco use. Precise objectives were 1) To draw together all those who depend on tobacco products for their livelihood, 2) To help advance the notion that smoking was an individual choice to counter public health advocacy to restrict smoking, and to help preserve the social acceptability of smoking.
