Walter Olson often implied that he was a lawyer, but he had no scientific credentials. He worked with Peter Huber for the tobacco industry through the infamous Manhattan Institute, and he was also with the libertarian Cato Institute. One of his most profitable themes was that of labelling research against environmental tobacco smoke as junk science".

Olson and Steven Milloy (of TASSC) were two of the first of the tobacco industry professional lobbyists to make effective use of the early Internet. Milloy had his "junk-science.com" website and Olson had "Overlawyered.com"
